Endoscopy means looking inside and typically refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an endoscope, an instrument used to examine the interior of intestine. Apart from looking at intestine, biopsies of suspicious leisons, cauterizing bleeding points, removing unwanted growths could be done. Usually it is a day care procedure where patient could go home the same day.

Upper Gastrointestinal endoscopy

In this procedure, endoscope is inserted though mouth and disease of oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and duodenum( initial part of small intestine). In liver disease, the blood vessels in oesophagus and stomach engorge due to portal hypertesion and could suddenly bleed. This is a medical emergency as the person could bleed and die. Using endoscopy these bleeding vessels could be identified and special bands or glue could be injected and bleeding could be stopped.

While this procedure could be done in wake adults with their co-operation, but children has to be sedated to undergo this procedure. Special endoscopes are available to do endoscopy even in newborn babies.

This is a procedure where endoscope is used to look into large intestine. This procedure in done in children to diagnose chronic diarrhoea, chrons disease, ulcerative colitis etc.
